Day 27 ~ Sea Day with Scenic moments!

 February 5, 2022

NAUTICAL TERM OF THE DAY ~ Above board

Anything on or above the open deck. If something is open and in plain view, it is "above board."

In case you're wondering, I'm finding these nautical terms in the Viking Daily. It's the handy little on-board newsletter we receive each evening with our turn down service to let us know the schedule for the following day. It's filled with interesting factoids and info about our destinations.

As we travel south, the weather turns colder and we are threatened with lowering skies. But before we had the chance to be enveloped in fog, we enjoyed some spectacular scenic cruising just south of Puerto Montt. We breakfasted in the World Cafe, the better to enjoy the extinct cones and rugged landscape as we cruised by.

According to our tour guide in Santiago, the country of Chile has two mountain ranges that run roughly parallel to the coast--the towering Andes, and the lower coastal mountains. As we travel south, the coastal mountains sink slowly into the sea and become the islands you see in this photo, tired mountains but still treading water and peeking their heads above the waves. According to Laura in Puerto Montt, the Andes chain ends abruptly there with the volcanoes in her neighborhood.

Here's the DH's montage of photos from our scenic cruising:

In the afternoon, we went to the rehearsal for Viking's Got Talent, the passenger talent show. The performance is tomorrow evening and I confess I'm not feeling all that confident. With the covid shutdown, we haven't been singing nearly as much as we used to. Fingers crossed we don't disgrace ourselves completely.

Just before we joined Dave and Kristy for supper at Manfredi's, the entertainment staff did an impromptu "What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor?" I managed to catch some of it:

This cruise has been chockful with unexpected moments of delight!

The evening's entertainment was the second show by Harry Rios, a jazz pianist and singer with roots in New Orleans. His "What a Wonderful World" really touched my heart. This is a world full of wonders every place we look, especially when we're looking at the people we love. (Kinda missing our girls, my parents, and our two little dogs...)

More soon...

  1. Thanks for the recap. What software do you use to put together the photo montage?

    1. Hi Gordon. The DH here!
I use the photo editor that comes with Microsoft operating system. I'm not very fancy with it, but it seems to be effective.

I search for free music downloads online. Most recently the music has been coming from freemusicarchive.org. There is a pretty wide selection of non-royalty music there.

I'm glad you enjoy the montage. I have fun putting those together.
