We had longer ways to go. But no matter,
the road is life. ~ Jack Kerouac
Well, not quite indefinitely at sea, but for far longer
than we expected. Our next port of call was supposed to be the Azores—a
collection of islands owned by Portugal—but a storm that boiled across the US
is now creating havoc in the Atlantic. If we continued on our planned heading,
Captain Slight told us to expect 26 to 30 foot seas. Not fun. So we have turned
tail and are skipping the Azores, heading southwest, making an end run around
the bad weather and cruising directly to Bermuda. We should reach Hamilton in 7
days.
Right now we’re off the coast of Africa, about even with
Marrakesh, Morocco.
Off
the coast of Africa.
Do you have any idea how odd it seems to me to write
those words? Never did I expect to be in such exotic places, experiencing so
many new things, storing away memories to fuel my dreams for years.
Today, we fell back into the easy rhythm of a sea
day—leisurely meals, trivia, choir, updating the blog. I pushed to get in most
of my walking during the morning since the captain expects 9 foot swells later
in the day. Since I’ve been walking so much on excursions, my step count goal
has climbed accordingly. I’m pushing for 8000 steps a day now.
Tonight, David Crathorne, our Harmony choir director, is
having a Broadway sing-a-long in the Casino lounge at 8:15 p.m. If we stick to
our regular schedule, we’ll miss it. We’ll have to skip our 2nd
seating dinner, which normally starts at 7:30 p.m., and instead will grab an
early meal in the Panorama Buffet. This also means we’ll try to catch the 6:30
p.m. production show featuring the Belinda King dancers and singers, before our
sing-a-long.
So that’s all the news that is the news from the Pacific
Princess for today. More soon…
What a wonderful trip. I've enjoyed all your posts.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Penny! It's been a grand adventure and we're not quite done yet. We have, however, been thinking homeward thoughts and will be ready to enjoy our little corner of the world for a while.
DeleteShame about the Azores. Have been in 30-40 foot seas and it’s not fun ... smart to make a run from it. Enjoy the sea days ... time to think back on the experiences of your RTW adventure.
ReplyDeleteI never try to second guess the master of the vessel, but that doesn't stop some of my fellow passengers. So many have been whining about missing another port, which is frankly stupid. Safety is always paramount, and I'm glad it's Captain Slight's top priority.
DeleteWe've loved all your posts and that you were so willing to share your experiences. We will, very much, miss you. Looking forward to your daily writings have been a joy to anticipate.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Larry. I'm glad you've enjoyed the blog. Some travelers collect key chains and refrigerator magnets. This is my souvenir, my chronicle of our adventures. If you've enjoyed the ride along with me, I'm delighted. But it's not quite over yet. We are scheduled for a stop in Bermuda on Tuesday next week. Thanks again for coming with us on this trip via the blog!
